How did Organic Looms get started?

It started with a rug buying trip to Nepal. Owner Christopher Frederick went along with a friend more than 20 years ago, expecting little, and came home with a different career in mind. Watching weavers tie thousands of knots by hand, he saw an art form no machine could copy. He also saw a gap in the market. Interior designers wanted genuinely hand-knotted rugs from someone who understood fiber, construction, and how a rug actually behaves once it is on a floor and under furniture.

Christopher built the business in the design community in Chicago first, then opened in Denver, and brought Organic Looms to Scottsdale's Design District in 2007. Two decades on, the idea has not changed. Find the finest natural fibers, work directly with the people who weave them, and hand that value to the person who lives with the rug.

What makes Organic Looms different from other rug stores?

We buy direct from the loom. There is no importer and no gallery marking the same rug up two or three times before it reaches you, so our designer net pricing lands below standard retail for comparable hand-knotted quality. That direct line also changes what custom costs. Most dealers add a premium for a custom order. We do not. Whether a rug comes off our Scottsdale showroom floor or gets knotted to your exact size and palette, the price per square foot is the same.

Large rugs are our specialty. Because we deal with the weavers directly, we can reserve an oversized custom loom, negotiate lead times shorter than most galleries quote, and supply designers with palace-size pieces at a price that still leaves room for their markup. Why does buying direct matter for a healthy home?

A hand-knotted rug made from a natural fiber is one of the few floor coverings you can bring home without adding chemicals to the room. Our wool, cotton, linen, and real silk are spun and dyed by hand. There is no synthetic latex backing and no factory finish quietly off-gassing for months, which makes these rugs a genuinely low-VOC choice for families who pay attention to indoor air.

Christopher and Jaime travel to the weaving regions in India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan to see the wool, the dye lots, and the working conditions in person, so the story on the tag matches what actually happened at the loom. What can you expect when you visit the showroom?

We start with questions, not a sales pitch. What room is the rug for, how many rugs you need, which colors and fibers you are drawn to, the rough dimensions, and a working budget. From there we pull options across a wide range, from a straightforward wool rug at an approachable price to a wool and silk piece that reads as bespoke.

Then we talk through the things people tend to forget. The pile height under a dining chair that gets pulled in and out every night. How a fiber holds up in a room right off the pool or the bath. Whether a plush alpaca hair-on-hide belongs in a bedroom, where it tends to shine. If we have the right rug in Scottsdale or in our domestic and overseas warehouses, we ready it for delivery. If nothing quite fits, we start a custom order at that same per-square-foot price. Local installation is always part of the deal.
