What to Bring to a Scottsdale Area Rug Store When Matching a Rug to Your Room

Shopper comparing fabric swatches, paint chips and a room photo against a patterned rug.

Bring four things to an area rug store: accurate room measurements, daylight photos of the space, swatches or color samples from your paint and upholstery, and a quick sketch of where the furniture sits. With those in hand, you can usually narrow a whole showroom down to a few real contenders in one visit.

At Organic Looms, we see the difference every week. Shoppers who come prepared leave with a rug that fits the first time. To plan your trip or ask what else to bring, reach out to our team or call (480) 947-4822.

What should you bring to an area rug store?

Bring whatever helps us see your room without being in it. Measurements tell us the size, photos show the light and style, swatches set the palette, and the furniture layout shows where the rug actually has to work.

Phone photos are fine. Take them during the day with the lights off, from the doorway and from each corner, so we can see the floor, the windows, and the walls together.

Scottsdale homes vary more than people expect. A desert modern house in McCormick Ranch usually calls for a different rug than a Spanish colonial in Old Town. Geometric designs in quieter, desert-inspired colors tend to suit the first, and classic Persian-style rugs often suit the second. Photos let us see which one you are working with.

Our rug store in Scottsdale welcomes weekday walk-ins, so you can stop by as soon as your list is ready.

How do you measure a room for an area rug?

Measure the full room, wall to wall, then measure the area the rug needs to cover. Note doorways, floor vents, fireplace hearths, and anything built in. Those details decide the size more often than the walls do.

A good rule of thumb in a living room is that at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs should sit on the rug, with roughly 12 to 18 inches of bare floor showing around the edges.

Under a dining table, the rug should reach far enough past the table that chairs stay on it when someone pulls out to sit down. Measure the table with the chairs pushed back, not tucked in.

Open floor plans are where standard sizes fall short. A 9 by 12 can look lost in a great room that runs from the kitchen to the patio doors. We make custom rugs to size at the same price per square foot as pieces on our floor, and because custom rugs are not returnable, good measurements matter.

Why do photos of your lighting matter so much in Scottsdale?

Because Arizona light changes how a rug's color reads, sometimes more than the rug itself. A soft sand tone can look almost white in a bright west-facing room at 4:00 in the afternoon, then turn warm and golden under lamps at night.

Many homes here are built around big windows, with views toward Camelback Mountain or the McDowells. Photos taken at different times of day show us how much sun the rug will take and how the colors will shift.

Light also affects how a rug lasts. Wool is our first recommendation for sunny rooms, and we use natural, colorfast dyes. For main living areas, we usually suggest a low to medium pile, which keeps desert dust from settling deep into the rug.

If you are torn between finalists, we can bring two or three to your home and leave them overnight. You see each one in morning and evening light before you decide.

How do paint and fabric swatches help match a rug?

Swatches let you hold the rug's colors right next to the room's colors, which a phone screen cannot do. Paint chips, a cushion, a curtain sample, or a cabinet stain sample all help.

One of our customers came in looking for a rug to go with her grandmother's rust-colored armchair, a family favorite. She was really on top of it. She brought room measurements, photos, and one of the chair's removable arm covers.

That arm cover was a great start. We could lay it right on the rugs and see which tones picked up the rust and which fought it, which helped us find something that would tie the room together.

Not sure what to bring? Pick the one piece in the room you would never change, like a sofa, a painting, or a chair like hers, and bring something that carries its color.

How does the showroom staff narrow down your options?

We use what you bring to rule things out quickly. Size eliminates most rugs right away. Your photos narrow the style, and your swatches narrow the color. What is left is usually a short stack worth pulling out on the floor.

From there, we lay your swatches on each rug, talk through how the room is used, and look at pile and fiber for pets, kids, and foot traffic. If nothing on the floor fits, we talk through a custom size or palette.

Before you visit, browse our showroom and weaving gallery. It shows rugs on our floor, yarn hanging on the wall, and the color chart our weavers dye from, a useful preview of textures and tones.
