How a Hand-Carved Silk Rug Finished a Modern Scottsdale Living Room

How a Hand-Carved Silk Rug Finished a Modern Scottsdale Living Room

The designer was looking for elegance in a rug with a pretty sheen from the hand carved raised silk design. That was the whole brief for this modern Scottsdale great room, and the Gold Embers rug met it. The silk pattern is carved so it sits raised above the wool ground, which means it catches the light and shifts from cool grey to warm gold as you cross the room. At Organic Looms, we worked alongside the homeowner's interior designer to place it, and the room settled the moment it went down.

If you are furnishing a home with your designer and want to see a rug like this in person, reach out to our team or call (480) 947-4822.

What Gives a Hand-Knotted Rug That Soft Sheen?

The sheen comes from silk. On this rug the design is carved in raised silk against a matte wool ground, so the pattern stands just above the surface and throws back light while the background stays quiet. That contrast is what reads as elegance. Look closely and the field is an eroded, almost weathered abstract in silver, charcoal, taupe and gold. It is not a busy rug. From across the sofas it looks like one soft, shifting tone. Up close it breaks into hundreds of small marks, like stone worn smooth by water. The carving is done by hand, the tall silk pattern clipped slightly above the low wool, which is why the light grabs it the way it does. It is also directional, so the color shifts as you walk the room or even as the rug is vacuumed one way or the other. In a space with floor-to-ceiling steel windows, that silk catches the Arizona sun all day, and the gold in the name earns itself around late afternoon. Set against the grey upholstery and the round walnut coffee table, the whole floor glows a little without ever shouting.

How Do You Choose a Rug That Works With Your Interior Designer?

Start with the room's permanent pieces and bring the designer in early. The floor, the stone, the steel-and-glass cabinetry and the big upholstery are not changing, so the rug gets chosen to live with them rather than fight them. Here the white oak floors and the soft grey sofas set the range, and the silvery gold of the rug pulled both together. We work with designers every week, so the back and forth is familiar. We can hold pieces for a client presentation, send memo samples, and bring several options to the house so everyone sees them in the real light before anyone commits. Pricing is at designer net, and it is the same per square foot whether a rug comes off our floor or gets woven to a custom size, so filling a large open plan does not cost extra. On a room this size, getting the dimensions right is half the job, and that is far easier to judge with the rug actually down. If you would rather browse first, look through our rug store in Scottsdale and pull a few favorites to see in person.

Why Does a Large Open Living Room Need a Hand-Knotted Rug?

Scale and staying power. A great room this size makes a small or thin rug look like a bath mat, and it wears a cheap one out fast. A big hand-knotted rug does two jobs here. It draws the seating into one zone inside a wide open plan, and it takes daily traffic without flattening or shedding. Natural fibers also hold their color under hard desert light, which matters in a room with this much glass. A quality wool and silk rug cleans up with far less fuss than people expect, too, since the lanolin in the wool sheds most spills before they set. Our organic, non-toxic rugs use no synthetic backing and no chemical finish, so nothing sits under your feet off-gassing all day. For a floor this large, that mix of size, durability and clean materials is the difference between a rug you replace in a few years and one your kids inherit.
