About Tibetan Carpets

Tibetan rugs are a wonderful choice for people who want an elegant look without having the busy traditional pattern of the standard Persion rug. Many people are attracted to the soft, plush texture of Tibetan rugs, and enjoy the simplicity of their design, as well as their flexibility and durability.

Nepal is the leading manufacturer of high-quality natural-fiber carpets. All our rugs are hand made from 100% Himalayan wool in the beautiful valley of Kathmandu.

All of our carpets are hand woven, requiring no machinery to be assembled. The fibers are combed and spun by hand and are made from all natural products that come from insect, animal or plant fibers. These fibers include wool and silk. Natural fibers are beneficial for the environment in that they are biodegradable, renewable, sustainable, non-allergenic, naturally stain-resistant and air purifying (see left inset).

The Weaving Process

Tibetan weavers have been crafting carpets for centuries. The process has remained the same for hundreds of years: First, the raw wools is washed and then sorted. Then, the sorted wool is blended with imported wool, depending upon the ratio desired. Next, the wool is spun into yarn, and the yarn is dyed. Our wool is dyed using standard chemcial dyes so the colors remain even.

Our Tibetan rugs are woven by experts on a vertical loom (see our videos showing how Tibetan rugs are created). A single weaver takes between 15 and 20 days to complete a standard 5'x7' carpet, depending on the specifics of the rug desired. After the rug is completed, it is removed from the loom and clipped according to the buyer's requests.
